Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies

The Romberg Tiburon Center (RTC) is the only academic research facility on San Francisco Bay. It is San Francisco State University's off-campus research and education center.

This ecologically-advanced master plan ties together existing historic structures with new state-of-the-art facilities for the studies in marine and estuary science. The site was originally a naval support facility. This plan ties together new administration and commons areas, labs, outdoor work areas and storage areas with existing facilities.

A new concourse is the circulation spine of the campus. This covered walkway is built on the existing massive crane rail structure which is a relic from the days when the site was a naval coaling station.

A Living Machine biological water treatment system, natural daylighting, photovoltaic electrical production, green roof, increase in native habitat and recycling of selected existing building materials are some of the ecological design features of the project.
