Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies
The Romberg Tiburon Center (RTC) is the only academic research
facility on San Francisco Bay. It is San Francisco State University's
off-campus research and education center.
This ecologically-advanced master plan ties together existing
historic structures with new state-of-the-art facilities for the
studies in marine and estuary science. The site was originally a naval
support facility. This plan ties together new administration and
commons areas, labs, outdoor work areas and storage areas with existing
A new concourse is the circulation spine of the campus. This covered
walkway is built on the existing massive crane rail structure which is
a relic from the days when the site was a naval coaling station.
A Living Machine biological water treatment system, natural
daylighting, photovoltaic electrical production, green roof, increase
in native habitat and recycling of selected existing building materials
are some of the ecological design features of the project.
